Day Ten - Sit. Stay. Eat.

Heading out of Texas we encountered some interesting things. First there was the "Gator 911" service, followed by the oil refineries. Soon we began to notice the flooded fields of crawfish farms and we truly felt that we had arrived in the Gulf.

Coming into Louisiana, we moved away from the coast and tried to escape the rain. Passing through the town of DeRidder, our eyes caught a sign for donuts, and we realized that it had been a few days since we had had a treat. We tried Daylight Donuts and were not disappointed.

Otherwise, we found DeRidder to be a bit odd. We took JD out for a walk and soon realized that the town does not appear to be very dog friendly. The worse case was the owner of "The Louisiana Shoppe" who actually interrupted her phone conversation to come to the door and yell at us that our dog cold not come in her store. We were simply walking by and really wanted to say, "Lady, our dog didn't even want to come in your shop!" At least DeRidder had grass. Pup was very happy to finally get a chance to romp in something other than the Texas dust and concrete.

The town of Natchitoches had been recommended to us. Being described as "The French Quarter without filth," it is a quaint little town which actually predates New Orleans. Founded in 1714, the town has a great charm and we enjoyed walking the streets and down along the river.

Back in the car we made our way to camp. The KOA in Lafayette provided a good stopping point. We looked at our dinner options and decided to drive into town to try out the Blue Dog Cafe. The Cafe is completely inspired by the art of George Rodrigue and is decorated with prints from his personal collection.

It was the best decision we could have made. The food was unbelievable, the atmosphere was amazing, and the live local music made the evening perfect. It also helped that our own pup bears a strong resemblance to the Blue Dog. It is definitely on our list of MUST DOS if you are ever passing through the area.
